Did you know, there is actually a science to your hair removal appointment? When to start? How often you should come in?

THIS time of year is the best time to start sugaring! Why?

We have 3 different growth cycles: Anagen (starting hair growth). catagen (the few weeks you see the hair growth) and telogen (release of the hair bulb/falling out) stage.

Because we have 3 different growth cycles, it takes a few appointments to get all of the hairs on the same growth cycle, coming in every 3-4 weeks for treatment. If the goal is to have the longest period of time between appointments without hair growth, we want to be removing the hair in the anagen stage of hair growth. Removing hair in this stage of growth is also what leads thinning the hair follicle and permanency over time.

Winter or early spring is a great time to get started with sugaring so that by summer, your skin is soft, smooth and hair free!

How often should you come in for your appointment?

This can vary slightly person to person based on how quickly your hair grows, how much the hair bothers you, and the body area.

For facial hair like brows, lip, or chin, some people may prefer closer to 2-3 weeks. Especially dark hair.

For underarms usually 2-3 weeks.

For bikini, brazilian or legs, around 4 weeks. 

Beyond 5 weeks, we tend to see other growth cycles coming in, and hair growth is in the catagen (falling out stage) of hair growth which means you’ll see hair sooner between treatments.

Does sugaring hurt?

Any form of hair removal that removes the hair from the root is going to have some level of pain. Because sugaring uses a molding and flicking method and is not hot, we find that the skin is less exfoliated which often decreases pain, along with the sugar not being hot like wax would be.

Ultimately, how painful a treatment is will also depend on your pain tolerance.
