It is COLD out there! Here are some winter skin care tips to keep your skin hydrated and glowing, even when it’s freezing out.
Multiple Serums
Serums draw water to the skin and deliver smaller molecules of treatment ingredients to the skin. I like to use 2-3 serums, especially in the winter to pack on lots of hydration. The skin often soaks them right up!
For me, that looks like:
Hyperfix Fading Toner after cleansing
More moisturizer
Moisturizer brings oil, emollients and ceramides to the skin. We need both water (serums) and oil (moisturizers) to properly hydrate the skin. In the winter months you may need 1.5-2 pumps of your moisturizer for the face vs 1 pump in spring and summer. If you’re also applying the neck and decolette, that would be 2.5-3 pumps. Moisturizers not in a pump bottle, use a good pea/dime size of product.
PM Seabuckthorn Oil
Oil is NOT a moisturizer, but is does create a barrier on the skin that locks in the moisture underneath. Taking 1 pump of Seabuckthorn Oil, rubbing it between your palms and *pressing* it on top of your skincare at night can be really beneficial. Especially if you have more dry or dehydrated skin. We want to press so that it’s not mixing in with the products underneath that we want to allow to fully penetrate.
Humidifier
Our heating systems love to zap moisture from our skin. Using a humidifier in your bedroom at night is a great way to keep not just your face but body more hydrated in your bedroom at night too. I like to look for ones that are less likely to grow mold. Ideally humidity should be 40-45%.
Exfoliation
Our skincare can’t penetrate dull, dead skin cells. While our cells do shed a little slower in the winter with less oil production, it’s important to exfoliate at least 2-3x a week. Some people will need more. Types of exfoliation are products with AHA’s, BHA’s or acids like:
Acids are excellent and gentle compared to a physical scrub, but I still love Cranberry Scrub here and there to leave the skin feeling so soft and instantly brighter. This scrub uses rounded jojoba beads which will not cause micro tears in the skin like products with apricots, walnuts etc will. Yes, the St. Ives Apricot Scrub you may have grown up using.
Healthy fats
Eating healthy fats like grass fed butter, avocados, nuts and seeds helps lubricate dry skin with oils and healthy omega 3’s and 6’s.
Internal hydration
For internal hydration I love adrenal cocktails. You can find my winter adrenal cocktail recipe and more about them here.
For the hands, put your gloves on BEFORE you walk outside to protect your hands and cuticles from getting cracked and dry. I love our Raspberry Shea Lip Balm on my lips and cuticles at night!
