We’ve loved sugaring since 2012, but many people still don’t know what it is! So, let us fill you in!
What is sugaring?
Sugaring hair removal is an ancient Egyptian form of hair removal that has been used all over the world for centuries.
Traditionally, it is a paste made of sugar, lemon and water. It is created in a specific ratio and boiled for a certain period of time to create a “paste” that looks like honey, but has the consistency like a taffy.
The method
On clean, lightly powdered skin with a gloved hand or tool, the sugar paste is “molded” in the opposite direction of growth. This is done at least 3 times, allowing the sugar paste to seep into the skin and wrap around the hair follicles. Then it is “flicked” off of the skin in the natural direction of hair growth, removing the hair.
Things that make sugaring unique
All natural – Made of sugar, lemon and water.
Not hot – The paste is only warmed to body temperature.
Gentle on the skin – Minimal redness and irritation after treatment. Soft, smooth skin!
Eco-friendly – We use a molding and flicking method, and biodegradable gloves along with pre and post care products that contain the best botanical ingredients.
Full body – Any area that can be waxed, can be sugared!
Waxing – Wasteful and not eco friendly
Unlike waxing, there are no sticks or strips being wasted, and one ball of sugar is used for the whole body area being treated. At our spa, we even use biodegradable gloves, making this the most eco friendly form of hair removal.
Waxing wax is made with ingredients like resin, petroleum, polymers and beeswax. It also uses strips that are pressed into the skin to pull off the wax made of compressed non-woven synthetic fibers like pellon or viscose, woven cotton like muslin, or natural plant cellulose. Both of these are wasteful and most don’t biodegrade.
Why we don’t like waxing
Hot – Wax is hot and can burn or lift the skin.
Wasteful – A strip is pressed/rubbed into the skin for each section, creating a lot of waste.
Irritation – Because the wax is hot and the strip is pressed/rubbed into the skin waxing can leave the skin more red and irritated.
Post sticky – Because of the ingredients used in wax, you can’t just melt off any remaining wax with a warm towel, like you can with sugaring!
Ingrowns – The hair is removed in the opposite direction of growth, making it more likely you will develop ingrown hairs.
